Jute is a fast-growing natural fibre which has become a popular choice for making sustainable rugs due to its durable and organic texture. Jute can be sustainably harvested then hand loomed, braided and woven to create a type of rug to suit any style of home. Our jute rugs are inspired by nature and come in a range of neutral tones and shapes such as ovals, rectangles, runners, area rugs, and round jute rugs.

The texture of each of our natural jute rugs depends on the weaving technique used and whether the rug is 100% jute or combined with cotton. The natural texture of jute rugs makes them suited to high traffic areas such as the living room or dining room adding a rustic and timeless appeal.

What is Jute made from

Jute is a fiber made from a genus of flowering plant originating in the regional areas of Southern Asia. The strands of fibre a ideal for weaving as they are long, shiny and soft making for strong threads. Jute is regularly used to make rope, burlap and hessian. The fibers are a natural brown off-white colour and have a pleasant scent similar to sea grass.

Jute is quick and relatively easy to grow, reaching maturity in 4 to 6 months and does not require the use of irrigation systems or pesticides. This makes it a cheap, sustainable and eco-friendly alternative to cotton.

How are Jute rugs made?

Jute fibre comes from the stem of a plant and is biodegradable. The cut stems of the jute plants are bundled together and submerged in water such as ponds, streams or rivers to help separate the fibers from the stem. The stalks are dried and passed through rollers to remove any broken or woody pieces.

Any waste material from this process is able to be rolled again or used to make paper, rope or wall board. These fibres are then hand loomed into rugs, chairs, baskets, bags or rope.

How to clean jute rugs regularly and recommend cleaning method for spills

Regular cleaning: We recommend you vacuum twice weekly on a carpet setting to keep your rugs clean. Alternatively, you can hang your rug outside and hit or shake gently to remove any dust or dirt. We do not recommend steam cleaning or machine washing jute rugs. You can use a dry cleaning powder which is designed for natural fibers if required.

Cleaning spills and stains: If you have spilt something wet we recommend spot cleaning immediately with a sponge, soft brush or clean white cloth with a dab of water or club soda. You can use a mild detergent or a 50/50 mix of white vinegar and water to target stubborn stains. Gently dab the stained area with a soft cloth, dry with a hair dryer and vacuum.

Do jute rugs shed and how to prevent shedding

Most natural fibre rugs will shed, particularly during the first couple of months. Regular vacuuming on a carpet or rug setting will help to reduce shedding by capturing any loose threads. We recommend that an anti slip mat or rug pad is placed underneath your rug to prevent movement. Where possible limit the amount of movement on the rug, avoid wearing dirty shoes and if you have pets try to keep their nails clipped to reduce friction.

What are bleached jute rugs?

When looking for your dream rug you may notice a number of rugs which are described as bleached jute. To achieve a light neutral shade jute can be bathed in a hypochlorite solution or a small amount of peroxide. When bleached correctly jute can maintain it's strength and durability, however it is unlikely that you can achieve white jute without mixing it with another fabric as they fibre will become too fragile.

Bleached Jute Rugs

Many people are turning to natural fibers for their home decor, and jute is one of the most popular choices. It's an eco-friendly material with a natural look that can be used in many different settings. One of the best things about using jute as your rug is that it will never go out of style!

Bleached jute rugs are also becoming very popular in the interior design world. These eco-friendly, natural fiber rugs can be bleached or dyed to suit your personal preference. You can choose from both washed and unbleached options that will give you a unique look for any space. The full range of colors means it is easy to find one that will match your existing decorating scheme!

Why jute rugs are bleached?

The term "jute" refers to fabric that has been manufactured out of natural fibers, collected from plants. The raw material is then woven into a beautiful rug that can be used in any space within your home or office. Bleaching the fabric before weaving helps preserve its colour over time through exposure to sunlight.

How often do you have to clean a jute rug?

Cleaning of jute rugs is easy if you follow a few simple steps. As a general rule use as little water as possible. Occasionally, in order to increase the lifespan of your rug, it is advised to send it to professional cleaners.

Regular cleaning: We recommend regular vacuuming, ideally twice weekly on a carpet setting to keep your rugs clean.
