The warm glow of candles can liven up any space. People worldwide have used them as decorative pieces for different occasions. Scented candles are popularly used in spas, restaurants and even at homes to help us relax. But with more homes adopting greener practices, the use of candles and their potential harms to our health and planet has come under scrutiny.
Traditional candles are made from paraffin which is a by-product of petroleum. These wax candles release toxins that decrease the air quality of our homes.
Nontoxic candles made from beeswax, soy, coconut, and rapeseed are some of the eco-options to consider. All-natural candles do not give off harmful fumes and make for a great gift as well!

How to Make Candles?
Making candles is a fun and easy project. Here are step by step instructions on how to make your own, personalised candle. The first thing you need to do is pick the scent of the candle- think about what smells good in your house or what scents compliment certain occasions such as birthday cake or pine trees for Christmas. Next, find a mould that matches the size of your wick - this can be anything from an ice cream cone to a cupcake liner! Place wax pellets into the mould and let it melt before adding fragrance oils (this is optional). When everything has melted together pour it into another bowl with some water in it so that you don't burn yourself while pouring back into the mould make sure your wick is in the place where you want it to be, also make sure that is secured. Now wait for 5-6 hours for wax to set. Light the candle once the wax is hardened.
Best non-toxic candles option
What are non-toxic candles made of? Natural candles can be made from a variety of materials. Here are some of them-
-
Beeswax Candles
100% pure beeswax candles produce a clean flame. These organic candles are known to improve air quality as they burn. They pull out dirt particles, odour, and toxins from the surroundings. Beeswax is a natural resource that is increasingly used in many sustainable products. These low-waste candles provide excellent aromatherapy benefits and are best for people with any allergies.
-
Natural Soy Wax Candles
Soy wax candles are better than paraffin candles. Pure soy candles are made from renewable and biodegradable resources. However, regular candles are often greenwashed as “made from soy” when in reality, only a tiny per cent of soy is used in them.
-
Coconut Candles
Coconut candles are an economical choice as they burn for the longest. You can find many non-toxic scented candles that are made from this kind of wax. This is because essential oils and other natural fragrances mix well with coconut wax candles.
Unscented organic candles are the most eco-friendly option as you can be sure no synthetic perfumes were used in them.
How are candles made?
The making of commercial candles involves pouring paraffin into moulds. Colours, scents and other chemicals are then added to these mass-produced candles.
It is easy to make homemade candles from beeswax etc. Homemade candle kits include wax flaxes and natural wicks. Here is how you can engage in a little DIY project of your own-
- Melt the beeswax flakes in a microwave-safe container.
- You can also use a glass bowl and create a double boiler.
- Allow the wax to melt and once you get a smooth consistency, add 5-10 drops of your favourite essential oil.
- Hold the wick in your candle jar and gently pour a few spoons of melted wax over it. You may have to hold the wick till the wax solidifies.
- Once your wick is in place, pour the remaining wax over it.
- Allow it cool thoroughly.
What are some of the best candle fragrances?
Different candle fragrances are suitable for different occasions.
- Cinnamon, nutmeg, and citrus scents are perfect fragrances for the holidays.
- Vanilla is an all-time classic as the scent remains long after your candle has stopped burning.
- Scents of lavender, jasmine etc., are popularly used in aromatherapy candles. These candles have a subtle scent that is not overwhelming.
